Default Have you backed up your hard drive lately?

Late last week, I had the hard drive go bad on my home desktop PC. At first I thought it was a virus or something malicious, but it turns out that I have several bad sectors on the drive. Fortunately, I make regular backups on an external hard drive. However, it has taken me days to recover, re-install software, import backed up data, etc.

I feel I dodged one since I make backups. If you don't have an external hard drive, they're worth their weight in gold.

/public service announcement. lol

This really is a good message, Scott.

I just had a scare 3 days ago when I left my laptop in the baggage claim area... and it was in my CARRY ON BAG! What an idiot! Luckily it was in the lost n found the next day and nothing missing. But it was tough to sleep that night knowing how much stuff is on my laptop - both personal and business. I do a backup every week or so, but it was still scary and a good reminder of how important backing up is.

Good post.

I actually had to have one of mine recovered. they were able to go into the dead laptop and pull everything out. I was freakin out, but felt much better.

Your back up drive advice is well noted.

I have a terrabyte of storage spread over three drives at home. My 500 gb external drive backs up my normal working drive and I also bring home my work laptop once a week and back that up as well.

I've burned irreplaceable images to DVD and they are locked in a safe deposit box.

I've lost stuff before and it's sickening to know it can never be retrieved... Besides, HD storage is dirt cheap.
