LS7 Oil Reservoir

Looking for an opinion regarding the depth of the oil reservoir for my LS7 in a a 69 Camaro. Have a Peterson tank 19 1/2" tall x 6". Installing in front of right inner fender. Note in photos, it sits about 2 1/2" below the subframe. It looks like it sits too low. Probably won't see it with the chin spoiler on, but don't know if it's too exposed. On the top side, the cap is only 1/2" from the bottom edge of the fender. Don't know if I want to change tanks to one that would be about 3" shorter as I would loose some capacity. Especially now that GM has increased the capacity on these another 1/2 gallon.

The way I see it is I could get a shorter tank, and add an oil cooler that would hold the amount lost, or just let it "hang out" as is. Maybe the people that have done this swap could chime in as to how low yours is?

I know its a bit of work but I'd have someone weld the tank shut were the filler cap is now and then weld in a new filler neck were it doesnt interfere with the fender.
you would gain at least an inch, maybe more.

Go to the home page and scroll down to the first red camaro, Scotts car, go to the engine section towards the bottom of the page jpeg 0105 it shows his peterson tank and how far it sticks down below the frame rail. He acually welded a tab for the lower clamp. I believe this is unavoidable and these guys aren't having any problems. Im getting ready to do the same for my 69 but waiting for the car to get back from paint. I was hoping you would get more responses on this thread, since there's not to many places to mount that tank. Also check out stuarts ride on the DSE website, they did a nice job of instaling his tank(although I dont believe its a peterson think its a modified gm). There's also some pics of Mark Stielows first ls7 install on the home page, I believe its a peterson as well. Hope this helps.

I've scoured this site and many others looking at pics of oil tanks, but not many show how low they hang. Have seen Scott's photo you're talking about and it appears to be about the same distance below the subframe rail. What has me baffled, no pun intended, is this pic from the good people at DSE. Note the bracket to hold the tank. It appears to set the bottom of the tank close to level of the subframe. I have been speaking with them regarding this, and they have graciously offered to measure the height of this tank (also peterson), but it is currently at the upholstry shop. Peterson has offered to exchange the tank if necessary. I just want to get it right before it's too late.

I measured mine just to see if its different than yours(2 gallon). Perhaps DSE is using a smaller peterson tank. please let us know what you find out from them.

Bill, I can't remember the exact height measurement on my tank, but it sure looks the same as yours. The bottom of my Peterson tank just touches the lower valence. To get just a bit more room for the cap, I have my tank tilted inward about 5 degrees.
