LS1 clearance issues

I am running into a clearance problem. I need to cut off 1 of the squares from the sides of the block.The LS1 has 3 on each side right at the bottom of the block and just above the oil pan.I need to remove the one on the drivers side closes to the front of the block.That 1"x1" x0.5" cube is stopping me from having room for my rack banjo fittings to fit in there.Do these squares have any purpose and can I trim down one of them.
