If your a car collector or love the original design you'd probably disregarded this overall forum and not have asked the question. No one is buying new cars and saying .. gee I think its perfect no upgrades needed (if they are its because they don't have money or don't know better). Technology and manufacturing methods have continued to evolve .. they probably would have put bigger rims and better brakes on if they could (after all look at the cars GM, Ford, Dodge put out today .. they started shifting to larger wheels etc nearly 20 years ago. I think most would agree that 17-18s are a natural fit to most models and makes. Any bigger often you have to do more design/fabrication to ensure the right overall aesthetics – (i.e. you have know what your doing to make it look right). I think your on the right track trying to keep the sprit of the design on such a classic (post above is a super idea!). You’ll note that people are even taking hub cap looks and re-making them out of solid billet.
