I would not eliminate the PCV valve and run breathers only... the PCV, by drawing fresh air through the crankcase helps prevent condensation and buildup of unwanted combustion byproducts in the oil.

Breathers only let crankcase pressure escape, but do not create an active flow of fresh air through the engine to help keep the oil clean.

It would be OK to run a hose to a catch can & breather, but I would still want a PCV hooked up.
