Default Half backwards

So i know i'm doing this a little backwards. I don't have my wheels or tires yet but I do have a 9" rear end that i'm cutting down to ~stock width. What I need to know is what is the best wheel tire combination for a 67 camaro with handling the main focus. And what is the best width to cut the rear end down from stock 60"? Right now the car has a stock front subframe with Global west arms and steering, rear is going to be a G-link and mini tubed.
I know CarlC is running 275 40 17's front and rear, is this the optimum setup with out tubing and how much more do you get with the extra meat on the back? And how much do you want to shorten the axle over stock, if any, for maximum handling?

Thanks,
