Oh yes 35 in all competing...they say that every year and the lot is always full. However we all know that only about 5 to 9 are real competitors. Plus, Goodguys always manages to pick 1 car for the 5 that has no business in the top five.

POLITICS is a business for some.
I think this year the top 5 will be some of the best we've seen yet.
I also think SMOY has taken alot of prestige away from SROY.
They just dont seem as "over-the-top" as they used to be in years past.

I believe your right about the top five. The bar will be raised again. The SMOY seems to be taken center stage the past few years, but that could change in the years ahead also.

Yeah, is it an increase in street machine popularity, or a decrease in street rod popularity?

The street rod fans aren't getting any younger.

I wouldn't think that's it. I have no factual evidence, just observation, but street rods seem to continually renew their enthusiast base with fresh blood. Many of the guys who are "old" street rodders now would have spent their teenage and young adult years in the custom era, and evolved into street rodders. I have quite a few friends who are now in their seventies who tell countless stories about their old fords and mercs, with the skirts, whitewalls, etc. Some of them are now "old" street rodders.

The traditional (not rat) rod lifestyle is huge with 20-somethings now. They build period correct cars and try to live the entire pre-war lifstyle. I can see some of them building mega-buck street rods in future. The whole street rod movement is going that direction. From Boydster, to Impression, to First Love, to Deucenberg, along with the huge traditional trend in general, you can see modern street rods being slowly re-invented.

I think it's just a typical trend pattern. People gravitate towards what is "hot" and right now street rod style muscle cars are the "in" thing. Eventually moods will change, curiousity will set in, and something "new" will emerge.
