One sorry guy is of course the Swede who bought it and now got it pounded by the US Customs. $10000 down the drain. BTW isn't that very low for a car like that?

This has happened before, the US Customs find cars destined for export that have been stolen many many years ago. The buyer must of course check this before finalizing the deal. According to the article the seller wasn't aware of it either.

So the question is, where has it been for 37 years. Race track?

I have two questions, is it all original and what drivetrain does it have in it. I wonder if it had been put up in storage for all of these years or restored a few times. If it is all original, the thieves kind of did him a favor, because he probably would have let it go years ago, now it has appreciated (of course nobody wants to go through having a car stolen). That must have been an unbelievable phone call when they informed him that they had found his car.

It wouldn't surprise me if the car had been successfully registered in other states by unknowing owners over the years... Vehicle registration database visibility across states only became relatively "seamless" over the last 10 years or so, and some states are still better than others with regard to integrity and accessibility of their databeses... This guy was lucky that someone was interested enough in the car, because it was an old corvette, to do the digging...

I am going to say that the owner had something to do with it and passed it off through the collector that sold it overseas. About time to get that new C6...lol

He is very lucky to get that car back as the statute of limitations for a theft like that is around 7 years...
