Default What manual transmission for big cam BBC?

Hello all I have a 427 BBC and im thinking of putting a large cam in it to reach my goals, cam range will be in the 3000/3500-7500rpm range. I was dead set on using a tko 600 before i decided to go with a larger cam. But after playing with gear claculators and doing alot of research seems to be 2 major problems. 1st problem is looks like im going to have to run steep gears in the rear so that in o/d my revs won't be running to low. Im talking possibly 4.30's maybe a little more, cam this size in a 427 BBC gonna need almost 3000 rpm in o/d gear to be happy. 2nd problem is with gearing this steep 4.30s or more and at my estimated power 600rwhp tko600 gearing seems too short. Dont wanna be roasting tires 1-3. So im just wandering what other transmissions might fit my needs better. And im thinking it has to be others out there who had to tackle same problems so im looking for some advice. Thx...

A T56 Magnum will handle that kind of power and tourque (750,750). There's a couple differant gearing options on them and it does depend on the rear tire heighth. I got the one with a 2:66 first gear I think my rear tire is 28 inches or so in total ( 19 inch rim + tire) I have read that a 4:10 rear should hit the right rpm's in sixth gear. I"ve yet to complete the car so I can only relay info I have read on this site and others.
With that kind of power I would think the tires will still roast in the lower gears. lol.
Try a search it should pull up lots of info.

With those gears, almost every manual tranny is going to have an extremely steep first gear. Except for a 2 speed power glide. If you really want to street drive this car with a workable overdrive, why not put in a cam that will work well for both. I have a mechanical roller in my big block that pulls 10" a vacuum at idle and will rev to 6800. I can pull it all the way down to 1800 comfortably in 5th gear. IMO that cam is way to big unless it's a RACE CAR.

If built correctly, a standard T56 will easily handle those hp/tq numbers. Unless you plan to drag race your car with multiple high rpm clutch dumps and full slicks, a Magnum would be a bit overkill IMO.

I would suggest an LS1 GTO style T56. They have a deeper 2.97 ratio first gear which would let you get away with a more mild rearend gear, possibly a 3.73. How tall of a rear tire do you plan to run?
