Default Naive Cold Air question

I've looked at numerous cold-air intakes and I have a question. It appears that people move the MAF downstream in the piping, closer to the filter in some cases. Is this necessary? is it desirable?

I'm trying to figure out the plumbing for an LS3 in a 1969 Camaro coupe. Thanks very much. Adam

I read somewhere that you don't want sharp bends right before or after the MAF.

There's an optimum forumula for that, wish i could remember! Something like 8" downstream of the TB? I believe Roger had mentioned it in his Camaro build thread...
