Default Ring gear ?

Ok guys here's one for you differential gurus. Hopefully this isn't a stupid question but I am wondering if there are any benefits to using studs in the ring gear vs using bolts ? I'm inquiring on this because i've never heard of it being used (and there could be a good reason not to). I'm not even sure if such a stud is manufactured or on the market. I know alot of engine builder use cylinder head studs instead of bolts for better clamping force and help saving the block threads. Just checking with some of you guys to see if you have ever seen or heard of this practice. Looking forward to your replys

BB,

I recently did a gear swap on my rear and used ARP fasteners, when I spoke with the techs at ARP I asked them this same question, they said in most applications its a clearance issue. Many ring gear bolts use a low head, dont want studs sticking out to high.

agree with above. any gear changes that I've personally done are tight for room inside the diff and I don't recall there being any extra space for a stud to hang out

You guys are awesome, for the world of me i dont know why i didn't think about that. I'm getting ready to assembly a 12 bolt and was just curious about the use of studs vs bolts. Things are very tight in there for sure.

Studs on the caps is good, also they have those girdles to stabilize the caps..do it :p
