12 bolt vs 9"

What is a 10 bolt rear end for a 68 camaro worth. What is better rear end a 12 bolt posi or a 9" . What is the downfall of putting in a ford 9" in a 68 camaro. I would like to hear who would do it and why and who would not.

i'm not sure of what a 10 bolt is worth but as for the 12 bolt vs 9" I think it all depends on what your running in your car. For the High HP engine or with twin turbo's look'n for the drags the 9" is the stronger rear end but if your going to do a nice street/ cruise car I'd go with the 12 bolt. The 12 can handle plenty of power. I plan running my orig 12 bolt posi with a 500 hp 6speed combo in my 68 camaro. hope this helps........

I try to keep them 12 bolts unless my customers won't let me. A good 12 bolt can handle a lot of power. We put 900HP to a stock 12 bolt Camaro rear with a spool and a rear support. And that is dead hooking with low 1.30 short times.

12 bolts are more efficient due to pinion location, A 9" pinion is always trying to climb the ring gear, eating a little HP along the way. Is a 9" stronger then a 12 bolt? Yes! is a 12 bolt capable of handling what most mear mortals with throw at it, with a street car? Yes.

Then again, you can really confuse things and get one of the 9" centers that uses 12-bolt gears.

9" has bigger internals. The pinion shaft is pretty thick. All that thickness absorbs some horsepower to turn it.

The alloy 12bolt third member is only rated for a chassis weight of 3000lbs or less.

I am going to run a 12 bolt, for the reason its gm and i dont want any ford in my car. and there is really no need to, I will be running a sbc with a procharger from Frank.

I bent several stock axles over the years behind a 427 big block putting out a little over 550hp to the rear wheels. I cured the problem by installing a set of Moser axles and then installing a Moroso Brute Strength differential. If you find a good 12 bolt housing, the moroso carrier will run you about 500.00 and the axles will cost another 250.00 plus what you would have to pay a shop to set it all up for you. You won't be sorry and like the others responding to this issue have said, it will handle just about anything you can throw at it.

After many years of running my 12 bolt, I just committed to a custom built 9" from Hot Rods to Hell. It will also handle just about anything I will be throwing at it and will also weigh significantly less then the GM12 bolt I was running.

I run 1000 hp through my built 12 bolt. A 12 bolt will put more power to the ground unless you get a 9" with a "corrected" center section to optimise the gear centerline.

Plus it is a Chevy part in a Chevy car for any originality or sleeper purposes.
