They make race tires in 18-inch.. so that's where I see the cutoff at from a "form over function" perspective. 17s are better performing (given the same type rim.. ie. forged, etc.). Sometimes you need an 18 to accomodate very large brakes but it's still not going to perform better than a 17 - all things being equal.
And there's nothing wrong with wanting to look nice. We're not building race cars, we're building street cars that perform. :shrug:
