Car tv shows

Everyone has their things they like or dislike. I also understand the show producers have a certian set of things they want to accomplish. That being said what I dislike about most of these shows is the reputation it gives the "real" builders like we have on this site. I see it as sort of a slap in the face to these builders. What is a customer supposed to think when they watch these shows? Personally I think you would have one of two types of people watching.
1. A person that has no idea what to expect in a true $50,000 a $100,000 build. These people would have the money but not the know how to do the build themselves (no disrespect).
2. People like many of us on this site that maybe don't get to visit shops or get to know them and their work. For this type of customer, I would think these shows would make them very hesitant to take their project to a shop.

I mean only the best builders get on tv....right. If these guys are the best, then wow!

Do you think any of the Dips even know of the existence of this site ?? They might learn what true builders think about their dumb ass !

Agreed, and that the builders are knuckle-dragging, eye-patch wearing dregs of society just trying to make a quick buck on a car. We try to promote the craftsmanship and skill it takes to build a car properly, but many shows to far more harm than good for the image of car enthusiasts.

I don't watch any of them - because if you can't actually learn something - then why bother. If I want to be "entertained" I'll watch something that's entertaining -- watching most of those clowns just makes be shake my head.

I watched Rods n Wheels yesterday and wasnt impressed. More of the same built in drama stuff. Not enough details on the builds. Then they went out and sold a stockish 68 Camaro rebuild for 27k. Sounds way over inflated. They didnt show much of the restoration process but if taking replacement body parts while still in the box to the painter is any indication of the work put into it, I'd hate to see the quality of the finished product.

My favorite is Overhaulin but only the newer ones. The pranks from the original were too much. Jessie really adds a lot to the show. Wish she was still on it.

Powerblock is good but really depends on the projects.

I've personally found Powerblock, now Powernation, informative. Xtreme 4x4 is by far my favorite because most of the show is dedicated to tech. Musclecar, Trucks and Horsepower are cool if I'm into whatever they are working on or discussing.

Fast and Loud is pure drama based, just like Street Outlaws. Everything is staged and meant to get you fired up about the next episode. The commercial breaks are insanely long, and I will only watch the shows after they have been recorded via DVR.

Counting Cars - Some episodes are good but most are whatever

Graveyard Cars - Can't get into that show

Chasing Classic cars - Some episodes give me a good automotive history lesson but some are blah.

Stacey David Gearz - Can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss the show. Pretty funny watching him toss old parts across the shop. Some of his projects were pretty cool.

Outlaw Garage - Always good to see what the guys at Austin Speed Shop are working on.

Fantomworks - I can't stand the guys attitude. Just doesn't seem like a guy I'd do business with.

Overhaulin - Cool if I like the car build but never seem to want to watch an episode twice.

They used to be pretty good about a good cleanup and paint even if rattlecan while things were apart, but they slapped that bad boy back together in a hurry with almost no prep and paint underneath.

You guys seem to be missing the difference between couple grand flippers and $25K average build shops with top craftsmen and a $150-$350K build high end shop.
If you pay a guy $275 to swap out a trans, odds are he isnt going to degrease and paint the underside of your car, you'd be lucky if he washes your crossmember off before putting it back on.

Well, the only thing I relate it too...is how I would do the job in MY SHOP...

And by the method I learned largely by watching their shows in prior years.

The type of builds that I watched Muscle car and Trucks do over the years that I liked the most and learned the most from were those that took more elbow grease and time to perform than cubic dollars.

I realize they need to do a little bit of everything to please a larger audience, I would just rather not see them cut corners to speed a project up. Anyone can bolt a bunch of high dollar parts on a nasty base and call it good.

I'm still watching the PowerNation shows though...best of the best on TV right now.
