Default Valve Cover Baffle (?)

So, I've had these Billet Specialites valve covers for a few years now.
I've had them machined in the back to allow for an AOS system.
The valve covers are not really designed for performance applications but the build quality is very good.

At this point, my question is (and Greg and I discussed this a few years back, and I forgot what was said)
what was/is the baffling for?
To minimize the oil loss thru pressurized atmosphere in the lifter area?

thanx, Mike
