Default Camaro VIN/COWL tag decoders help

Hey guys,

I'm entertaining buying this Camaro convertible and unclear if its a real SS with a 396. I do know the vin doesn't match the block which the owner whom seems like a honest guy said was swapped in the 90's.

I've been reading decoding literature for the past 3hrs.

Can any Camaro experts tell me if this car is a real SS or SS 396?

Thanks

Looks like a 68. Pretty sure it can’t be verified from cowl tag. VIN has no information either. Assume it is not an SS and pay accordingly since the real value was lost with the matching engine.

Charlie is the expert. Maybe he will chime in.

You could also post on Camaros.net. Those guys live for this stuff…

I think I got it figured out. Sure am glad I didn’t get emotionally attached enough to overpay!

Thanks

I'm going to say if you don't have the P-O-P its nothing, unless, you can go over the car with the fine tooth comb and verify everything that makes it an SS or an SS Big Block car, there are ways to decipher an SS SBC car to an SS BBC car, holes, lines sizes, exhaust tail pipe bolt holes in the frame rail, front springs, leaf springs, so many variables,

I know for a fact my car is not an SS, but the guy who owned it sat an SS next to it and swapped all the parts from one to the other,
