Brushed bumpers

Kenny did with the brushed nickel trim. It looked fantastic!

My guess that chrome is too hard to get a nice brushed look.

I talked to the guys at Sherms Plating up in Sac....he thought it was a bad idea to do nickel....something about oxidizing real bad or something. I had Sherms strip and straighten mine for now. They are in bare steel for now so I can flush mount bolts etc

If you do the bare metal, scuff and clear etc, the bumper has to be very straight...no ripples or dings or it will look like crap. If you plate them or paint, them you can get them alot smoother

I believe on SW Chopper's (sp?) Chevelle that he bought from Chris Moe last year he brushed or de-chromed the bumpers too....

If I was doing it from scratch, I'd have them nickel plated and then (don't know if Im saying it correctly) the chrome shop can skip the final process of "clearing" to avoid the bright chrome appearance. And some chrome shops just know what to do if you tell them you want a brushed look. (I hear there is one in Tucson)
My bumpers were chromed. I then spent awhile taking scotchbrite to them. I tried a directional one way pattern, but chrome was too hard and it just looked scratched. Finally I took a palm sander, put on the scotchbrite, and away I went. It's a weird effect. I get compliments. But it's not a "straight" brushed look as it ends up having this random, twirly, brushed look. Everyone stares at it and can't quite figure it out. It dulled it just enough to get the chrome look off, and thats exactly what I wanted.

The easiest way to do this maybe is what Charlie Libby did on his NASCAR Fairlane. He powder coated the bumpers in dull silver. I like the way yours ended up, does not look like something to custom, just looks good. I spend many hours looking at all the ways of doing it and different plating methods and this is the same thing I will be doing.

you can d.a sand 80, 180, 400, then scotchbrite with red, and it will look good, kinda like james says, not to custom just nice. i will get pic of my shops 69 where we did that. lots of people noticed it and wondered if we made stainless bumpers lol

i have not had a problem with them yet , but they have been done one and a half years .
