Totally agreed. Not only does it give people direction, but it grooms them to be better citizens overall IMHO. I'm ex-Navy Crypto.

I'd be proud if my son joined the military. My buddy is a SSGT Army 31B (MP) and he just got back from his 3rd deployment over to the 2 sandboxes. He's a reservist. So I'm sure the Active guys are over there quite frequently rotating in and out annually. With the economic breakdown we've been in for 2+ years now the military is the safest bet. They are actually shutting down recruiting facilities because they are at near maximum capacity % wise. No one is getting out.

I tried getting back in as a Navy Crypto Officer after I got my degree in 2009.....and it's damn near impossible with any special waivers needed. (my eye)

Thank him for everyone for his choice to serve! I come from a Military family and I know it's not a life I could lead.

Mom's Dad served in the Army WWII
Dad's Dad served in the Army WWII
Dad retired after 30 years working for the Govt with time in the Navy and FBI
The brother under me is 13 years in the Marine Corps. 2 tours in Iraq.

Just got back from Afghanistan last month. Working on my 12th year of Active Duty. Understand your pride and concern as a parent, but please understand that MPs are as likely as anyone else to deploy and be in the thick of things. This is an entirely different type of war and a changing Army. Tell him to listen well and train hard. His NCOs will take care of the rest.

I wish my Dad felt the way you do , I just turned 19 and plan on joining the Air Force or Navy Pretty soon. Even tho i old enough and don't need my parents permission ,It would be nice not to go against my dad's wishes ,My mom understands ,but the pops "not so much" ,I love Aviation! and thats Where I see myself.

My daughter is a senior this year and has expressed interest in the military. I told her this can open up many doors, although getting her mother to come on board is another story.

I have been in aviation for 25 years, most of my co-workers are x-military. I hear their stories and realize I missed out. And where else can you work on the hot-rods of the sky, and most carry weapons to boot.

To be in the military is scary for me. But your son is very practical in his decision, with the economy now (sadly). I wish him luck in his endeavors.
