I have no idea. I don't know what backspacing or offset is needed for a first gen. The backside of the rim center is not that close to the caliper though on my car. Keep in mind that I have 3/4" adapters on my car to push the rim out more too. You may want to PM Jerry, intocarss, as he has a set on his 68 camaro. I'm sure he can tell you more about what it takes to get the rims onto a first gen.
Keep in mind that modern OEM rims are typically high offset rims. That means you'll have to add adapters to bring the hub of the rim back to a lower offset, towards the middle of the rim, or, another way to think about it, push the rim out towards the body of the car. You'll need to take that into account when selecting a rim not only to know what adapters you'll need but also to include the adapter thickness in when trying to determine if the rim will clear the calipers.
