Getting ready to start my project (69' Camaro) need advice... - Lateral-g Forums

I have been on this forum for as long as it has existed, same with pro-touring.com , I just rarely post as I am not near the talent that most of you are... Anyways, I would like to get some advice on rebuilding my car, I know there are plenty of members here that can help. My car has been in my posession for a good number of years but the funds have not, so it has been sitting. Before I bought it, the previous owner had cut the rear end out to tub it for drag racing, installed a 12 point cage... I think they butchered it, but that's beside the point. I want to return it to normal, aside from a mini tub. They put in some home made rear frame rails, I'd like to replace them with factory style. The biggest issue I have here is my budget or lack of I should say. I will piece it together as I can afford to and ALL of the labor will have to be done by myself since it costs too much to have it done. Where should I start? How can I assure the rear is straight and even? I am wanting to get the body done first, not necessarily in paint, but at least a complete shell. I am fairly good with a welder (have a Miller 185) and have a good mechanical understanding, but most of all I am not afraid to begin this project! I can do any part of this, just don't know where to start and not sure how exactly to go about it just yet. I have to do the passenger side quarter, possibly the drivers side too... Any pointers will be GREATLY appreciated !!!

Do you really want a 12 point cage in the car? I guess that would be my first decision, what to do, if anything, with the cage, then start closing in what the previous owner cut out of the car, taking care of the floors and trunk floor if it needs any work.

How solid is the car?

looks like a lot of work, but its an awesome car to work on. have fun with it. and thats a sick suburban!

No, the cage is going in the dumpster.... The car (what is there) is pretty solid, just surface rust here and there, no bad rot that I have found. Would it be wise to leave the cage in there for structure right now, or should it be alright to remove it? I am thinking the support isn't there if I pull it out, but it has to come out at some point.... See, I get frustrated and need direction

When the rain stops, I'll get better pictures, but this is what I have on my computer right now...

I have an engine for it already, even though it is far from needing one. I came across a VERY good deal, so I grabbed it. 383 all forged, lightwieght Ohio crank, 6" H-beam rods, Ross pistons, Trickflow heads, etc..

I have a 12 bolt too, 52" WMS to WMS, should work well with the mini tub I have planned.

Your off to a good start. Putting together a solid build list is important and will help you see where to start. Keep up on posting pictures as things progress. Love to watch a killer car be built!

Good call, I thought the same thing.

You should follow the build thread on "Project Track Rat" for Camaro Performers magazine, alot of the work that you described is being covered. Also, pick up a Feb. copy of the Camaro Performers as there is an article on replacing the rear frame rail and squaring up the car. Good luck!
