Talking Since it's empty...

Since it's totally empty around here, with nothing much to look at yet, I figured we could test the pic attachment function.

Take a look at what I did to the genuine '70 A-833 HEMI Spec 4spd in my 442 a couple of years ago!

That Olds 455 builds so much torque, that even with the hydraulic roller (306 adv / .605 / 114 centers), Hooker SuperComps, and single plane intake scrubbing off quite a bit of low end, severe drivetrain failures have always been an issue. Too bad I didn't take any pics of what it did to the Auburn "Pro Series" posi unit, as it was powdered metal all throughout the third member (what a mess that was!)

Red face yes - can laugh now

People that happened to be watching said that just about the whole car was completely engulfed in big scary flames for about 2 full seconds, apparently the result of the gear oil blasting onto the collectors! I saw it coming up over the driver's door - good thing I had the windows up! Thank God that nothing came through the floorpan, and that fire went out just as quickly as it started!
This trans is supposed to be absolutely indestructable, which is why I went through all of the hassle to crossbreed it into the package in the first place, as opposed to the 4L80E that I was originally eyeballing for its arguable strength + overdrive. My trans specialist said that in his entire 50 years of professionally building race trannies, that he has never seen this type of carnage before, especially out of a genuine HEMI spec A-833 - especially on street tires. I was fortunate that this kick ass old timer still had a few absolutely brand spanking new original A-833 cases, tail housings, correct HEMI spec replacement gears... all heavily smothered in Cosmoline in his inventory from days gone by. He assured me that their had to be some sort of structural defect in the blown up trans, possibly an inconsistency in the metallurgy of the cast iron housing, or a stress fracture in a gear (which then spit out a tooth that wedged in between the other gears to cause the case to split the way it did).
He assured me that if I spent the money with him to build another A-833, that he would stand behind indefinitely, stressing that this just never happens to these trannies - ever! I had him pull the trigger on the deal, puckered up (politely) when I saw the bill, and slammed that bad boy in. It has been everything the old timer said it would be - unkillable + actually getting better and better in all ways with every pounding I put through it.

Here are the specs on the brute that does all of this damage:

1970 Olds W-30 455
Speed Pro Forged Pistons 10.25:1 Compression .040 over
Childs & Albert Gapless Design Moly HD Piston Rings
Olds HD Nodular Iron Crankshaft at .010 / .010
Olds Forged Connecting Rods Shotpeened / Resized
ARP Rod, Main, Cylinder Head, and Intake Manifold Bolts
Fully Balanced Rotating Assembly
Edelbrock Performer 6051 Aluminum Cylinder Heads (heavily massaged)
Crane Dual Valve Springs and HD Retainers
Crane Gold Series Full Roller Rocker Arms
Mondello Extreme Duty 3/8 HD Pushrods (Cryogenically frozen)
Crane Hydraulic Roller Cam with cast iron distributor drive gear 305 duration / .605 lift / 114 lobe centers
Crane Hydraulic Roller HD Lifters
Mondello HD True Roller Timing Chain (Cryogenically frozen) set at 4 degrees retard
Mondello Bronze Cam thrust button + GM Rollercam Locator Plate
TRW High Volume / High Pressure Oil Pump
Mondello Extreme Duty Oil Pump Driveshaft (Cryogenically frozen)
Moroso Low Profile Race 7 Quart Oil Pan
Mondello Oil Gallery Restrictor Set
Dual Remote Oil Filters / AN -10 Oil Cooler in Howe Race Radiator (Total 10 Quart System)
Edelbrock Torker Single Plane Intake Manifold
Holley's Latest 4Di 900 CFM Laptop Programmable TBI Fuel Injection System with O2 Sensor
Accel “Billetproof” HD Distributor with Accel Supercoil + MSD 6 Ignition Box
Brand New AC Delco Water Pump
CVR Industries High Torque Mini Starter
Mobil One Oil and Filters used exclusively

I wanted to get the ol' 442 up on Wheel to Wheel's chassis dyno BADLY saturday, to finally see just what kind of torque figures this thing belts out, even after 50K of year round daily driver duty + almost daily "abuse", but found that they were running so behind on the dyno list that they most likely weren't going to be able to get to me in, so I figured maybe it was better that it remained a mystery...

Summary? I have about 50K miles on the entire build now, about 30k miles on the trans, and all I really have to deal with these days is an annual clutch replacement. The grumpy Detroit locker sounds like it may be the next catastrophic failure, which I fear will take out the sweet nodular centersection that is installed in the ol' Moser 9". If I do ever go into a complete rotisserie rebuild on this thing at some point, I have every intention of installing a 4L80E on the next go 'round, as I feel that the drivetrain won't get shocked as hard, possibly extending its expected service life overall by leaps and bounds. This insanely torquey Olds 455 will most likely kick the snot out of any torque converter, so I'd no doubt be wise to spend the big dollars on a very very strong peice - nothing like grenading a converter, filling your whole tranny up with BIGTIME metal (been there / done that way too many times, which is what put me into the A-833 4spd in the first place...)

Here are some pics of the build:
