Default Tremec Trans question

I just purchased a 69 camaro I'm looking into changing my 4 speed muncie out for a TKO 600 or T56 from DD performance. I've found factory trans out of mustangs (5&6 speed) for much less than what DD performance is asking for. Is it worth the extra money? What would I be getting for the money? Can I use a mustang 5 speed/viper 6 speed as a direct bolt on for my Camaro?

Thanks in advance

A T56 6 speed from a late model camaro would be an easier swap. Although if you really don't need that extra gear the TKO600 would be the excellent choice too.

Well... first of all, the factory transmissions are not mere bolt in. They will require adaptation just like the rest of what is available aftermarket. The given is... most of the aftermarket available transmissions are alreadt set-up to make things easier.

The D&D, RPM and Rockland Standard transmissions have a few things that are considered a good thing when looking at it from an internal perspective. They all come with a steel 3/4 shift fork and the majority of them have upgraded synchros and a multitude of other available options that a used, stock, transmission will not already have. Not to forget to mention that they will already have new bearings, energizer springs, dogs and seals.

Is it worth it ?? I'll say yes. You dont exactly know what you have when you drop in a used Mustang or Viper trans. At first look... I would be interested in why the transmission is for sale. Was it abused ?? Was it in a wreck ?? How many miles are on it ?? Is there a warranty ?? What if it doesnt work when you go to drive it for the first time ?? Will the seller work with you to get the issues resolved ??

And lets not forget that the D&D, RPM and RSG transmissions are set up for performance use right out of the box. You can not say that for a stocker.

I guess you really have to ask yourself what you really want. Do you want 5 or 6 gears ?? What is your rear end ratio ?? How will you be driving it ?? And ultimately... do you want something right off the palet that will work without question or do you have the time and funds to go through the used unit and fix any issue that exsist if it doesnt work as it should ?? Basically... is it worth any headache to to save a couple of bucks ??

Figuring out if you want a 5 or 6 speed is, I think, a harder decision. I have created a ratio calculator if it would be any help to you. Just PM me your e-mail and I will forward you a copy (excel format).

But if I can impression you with anything... it would be to continue to do your homework... just like you are doing and really educate yourself before you spend your hard earned money on something that doesnt suit your ultimate needs.

Tom, do we all have time to gain 40 years of experience before our cars rust away? LoL

You should also be aware when looking at used parts that there are a number of versions of the T56. I believe that there is eight. As for the 5 speeds that came in the earlier Mustangs: Some years had T-5 (5.0 era), some had T45, some of the newer are TR-3650 (360 lbs-ft) and I believe certain Cobra models have a TKO version but not sure. So again if buying used know what your getting because a T5 will not handle what a T56 or TKO does. As chicane said above these transmissions will require adaptation ie; Crossmember, driveline length, shifter location just to name a few. There is a lateral-g member that had T56 for sale. Here is link https://lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=10742

Also another member that has LS1/T56 combo for sale

I believe chicane works with Tyler at ATS (not sure) so if he does him or Tyler could help you with T56 conversions. It is what they do and do it well. They are a sponsor here. http://www.americantouringspecialties.com/main.html
