Posts 4 April's Art Show
Looks like I get to start one. Wow, it has been a little since I have drawn a car. I realized this when trying to do these. I actually started with the Pinto, but in the middle I got struck with the Vega, then I figured out how to finish the Pinto. So now I have two. I'll try to keep this short.
first, the Sure Win Vega. This one started out with an older Vega with the thinner bumers. A friend of mine was telling me how the "thing" to do in the day was to put a split bumper on a Vega to make it look like a 70 Camaro (he did it to his). I thought, why not carry that theme further. Along with the split bumper, I added a 2" extension to the nose to complete the look. Out back, I used 70 Camaro tail lights along with a modified to fit rear bumper. I put some oval exhaust sticking out the back and set the car on a set of 01 Corvette wheels. I added the popular single stripe down the middle in flat metallic gray circled by a thin purple pinstripe over a nice bright yellow paint. Put a new Corvette motor in it and it will be sure to stand out.
The lil' horse would be the emblem that I combined the bucking Pinto and the Running Mustang together, just playing around.
Wild Horses- I have been wanting to update a Pinto for some time now. It starts with early 70's Pinto, again with the thin bumpers, while due to the modifications, a later model may also work. The first idea I had was putting Mustang GT 500 tail lights on it for a different look. I then went ahead and added the center rectangular exhaust from th same car. While I personally like the older pintos with the thinner bumpers, I replaced the stock rear bumper with a modified 65 Mustang piece so it wraps upward on the sides. A wing is added, but is attached where the bolts come through the rear window for the hatch. To make the front as exciting as the rear, I decided to add a modified 65 Mustang front fiberglass racing bumper. I added a tube grill and some driving lights to be a little reminiscent of the famous Eleanor. If this was mine, I would be happy with the old FE 5.0, but since it is a concept, you can go crazy with the number of later model engines available. To show of it's Mustang roots, I painted it with the infamous colors the race car was dressed in (blue with white stripes). After I drew a small scoop remenisant of the original mustang, I notice how the newer Tacomas have a really nice similar looking scoop that the opening actually goes down into the hood a little. I used some big AC Cobra style wheels to get even more of a street race car feel to it.
Hope you like it. I also hope for a good turn out this month. It looks like there was some intrest when this one was announced.

...figured I'd join in at Ben's request--
as posted in the contest intro thread:
I had watched "The Man With the Golden Gun" a few weeks back... and then Ben announced a Sport Compact Killer contest... soooo..... while researching another project, keeping up with a loaded project board, and generally playing while I should be sleeping... I developed this for ****s and grins:
An AMC Hornet, with a twin-turbo 360... why not? I grafted in the center hood section from a new Challenger, cleaned up some trim, drilled the front bumper (and molded and tucked it), added a chin spoiler, splitters, added lower driving lights for those Mulholland sprint sessions, and used the factory front parking light openings to feed the turbos. It's slammed on a tube chassis with a full cage, and wears some fitting bright yellow w/black accents... Oh, and why not some import tuner-style wheels while we're twisting the knife a bit?
Hope ya dig it.
...and here's Bond's ride for reference:

Here's mine for this month. A lot of what went into this ride was inspired by a project car I had for a while, an 83 Chevette. It was my college cruiser, and although it was a blistering 19 second ride in the 1/4, lowered with 17" wheels the 2000 lb car would shred corners like a go kart. I started gathering parts to eventually make a serious G machine but unfortunately had to bail. Ever since selling the car I've had old compact car withdrawl. In answer to this month's contest, If I were to try again with a small car what would I use?
Here's the Vette with 3" drop and 205-40-17's alla round...
Here are a pair of 335-30-18's behind the Vette...
I did a drawing of the Vette a while back and was going to revise it a bit but decided to find something older than a smog ladened ride. One of the cars I stumbled across while dong research was the 1968 Buick/Opel Kadett. What a fantastic little car! I wanted my cheVette to be an all around killer and this car is no different. Front suspension is convereted to Mustang II with coil overs and all the handling goodies sporting 215-40-17' on 17x7 wheels. The back has been tubbed and narrowed with a 9" and 3-link to fit fat-n-massive 335-35-18's on 18x12" wheels. I thought it best to stick with "smaller" 12" brakes, knowing that this small a car doesn't need brake overkill to perform well. This also allows drag light weight 15" wheels to house the little skinnies and the 325-50-15 DOT drag tires.
Powering this 1/2 pint is a well warmed over and matching the make of the car Buick 3.8 turbo. I've read that very streetable 500 hp and 650+ lbs of torque are easy to come by in these little motors. Back that with an unbreakable 200R4 and you've got a tested and true combination.
Body mods are basic, larger hole up front for the intercooler to breathe, carbon fiber hood and chin spoiler, bug juice green paint with a two tone blue stripe, massive side exhaust ports, stretched rear wheel openings, and muscle car inspired rear spoiler to keep things on the ground at high speeds.
With it's combination of light weight, plenty of power, tight suspension and super fat meats, this is one car that can provide Mr. Toad with one seriously wild ride. 9 second e.t.'s, face planted against the glass through the corners and 25+ mpg with the air on sounds just about right to me, all while cruising across the country on the Power Tour and such.

I've been meaning to contribute some work to the contests Ben and the others have been putting a lot of effort into. I finally had some time to work on something I've been wanting to do for years. These Monza Spyders were pretty cool from the factory considering the times, but with a little nudge....alright, a dropkick...they can be a real animal. (pun intended) They have a bit of racing heritage already so it's not like I'm going from granny-wagon to world-beater.
Anyway, this potent little arachnid comes tightly packed with a beefier frame and roll cage, major suspension/brake upgrades and aggressive stance and some custom 17's I whipped up (Yes they have 8 spokes to match the 8 legs). Rear is mini-tubbed to swallow some wide rubber. I was considering a turbo-6 but, I can't resist....LS motor with a turbo.(2 if they fit!) On this one I'll go with a Auto-trans and paddle shifter. Interior is adapted from a Cobalt SS Supercharged with the Recaro seat option.
As for wrapping this package, I added some fender flares, made a ramair hood, and massaged the busy looking front fascia to allow for 68 Camaro bumpers and a 2nd gen style chin spoiler. Like the 76 IMSA race cars, I decided to shield those headlight buckets. Behind them are a composite light assembly with halo headlights and integrated blinkers. I thought it gave the car a Mad Max look. The rear fascia would be reworked to include a center exhaust and small air diffusers. Taillights would be smoked with LED brake lights. I wish I had time to do that rendering.
So.......before....
After....

Here's another entrant from HotRodKristina. She posted on our announcement thread so I moved it over here for her...
This was done as a promo piece for Truckin' a few years back. The blurbage:
[I]Leave a '78 Ford Courier alone with a DTM Ford Focus and-bow-chica-bow-bow-you get a Retro Racing Beast. To paraphrase Kristina: This concept embodies her fascination with minitrucks and road racing.
The drivetrain includes a built Cosworth Duratec block punched out to 2.5L, with custom cams and a billet crank. Add an equal-length twin-scroll turbo manifold with GT3071R dual ball-bearing turbos, breathing through a stainless 3-inch exhaust system, plus a Cosworth dry-sump oiling system and custom ECU, then bolt on a Viper-spec, heavy-duty T56 six-speed tranny and custom aluminum driveshaft. After that, you'll hit those late apexes with confidence on a front tubular suspension and rear IRS from an early '90s BMW, with KW Variant 3 coilovers on all four corners and sway bars with adjustable end links.
The braking came courtesy of Wilwood, with a six-piston front, four-piston rear setup that includes manual bias control in the cab. Over the brakes are lightweight forged OZ Racing wheels shod with appropriate R-compound tires. Let's not forget the interior: Sparco seats, harnesses, and steering wheel, a complete NASA-spec cage, and full-digital instrumentation. Did I mention the custom aero-friendly bodywork? You'll need plenty of downforce to chase down the big guys at the next Time Attack!

Man Ben, That was my next choice. I have a model of one I was prostreeting (shows how long I have been working on it). Turned out great. I love how you carried the spider theme through. Great work,
Mike

Ben, love the Spider! I like the theme carry over. You definately took the spyder to another level. Design is clean...even the wheel spokes look like "spyders" - NICE! I always like seeing what ya come up with next!
