Default IRS in a secon gen camaro?

Is anyone here running or building a second gen with an IRS? Maybe a 'vette setup? Or any setup for that matter. If so, can you please post pics of it or direct me to a thread? I am trying to find a way to get a full C6 drivetrain and suspension under my car. Any ideas?
Thank you,
Eric

c6 rear will require a full tilt build of the suspension, do a search on the board and check tylers 1.gen at ironworks.... ita no small matter to do a c5/6 rear.

i have helped do a jaguar IRS in a 1.gen and it can bolt in without any floor cutting if you fabricate the right brackets.... (i dont have a 2 gen at my disposal. and the shipping would be costly, but i could build you a set of brackets without braking the bank if i found a 2.gen to build it on)

I would go for a setup from a Pontiac GTO of the newer models, they have the LS1or LS2 engines and can handle a lot of torque. Same style of rearend is in the new Camaro.

Here is one on eBay

Would be quite easy to build in to a 1st or 2nd gen F-body

i would have to agree with janne... the jag setup has some shortfalls and is essentially a 1950 british design... (enough said )

I know that this is a street rod part but I have always been impressed with how well it worked and the quality of the unit. Heidts rod shop Rear IRS unit IMO is worth a look. http://www.heidts.com/index.cfm/page...rod/prd130.htm

I wonder how that would compare with the Thunderbird/MKVIII set up? The Ford unit is a SLA type.

One on Ebay: http://tinyurl.com/T-Bird-Rear

Now this one uses the 7.5, and thus is pretty weak, but a MKVII or a Supercoupe rear will use the 8.8.

Shiny Side Up!

Default Check over at

there is a project on a 2nd gen called Re-Peeled and they are developing a bolt in IRS for the second gen using a Jag IRS. I think they are developing it for Heidts to sell as a kit. Look in the project section of this site. It is also running the cooliest rims I have ever seen.

There are a couple of things to think about with the C6 IRS. First how much of a back seat do you want? The forward sweep of the upper control arms tends to eat that up. Plus the transaxle will free up floorboard room for your feet but it will make it pretty skinny for the back seat guys. The lower you want to make the car the more it will eat up the interior obviously. I have heard of guys installing Mustang Cobra IRS centers in cars but they say the Half shafts cost a truck load of money. Trans axles with torque tubes are pretty inexpensive, but you will wind up doing alot more fab to get everything in. I would probabley do a C5 transaxle and narrow up the cradle. The C6 trans axle has outboard rear mounts and limit how much you can narrow the trackwidth. I have a complete C5 transaxle, torque tube and suspension I could make you a great deal on for this project.

If you have any more questions give me a call. Check out my website.

Rodger

Thanks for all the input ! I thought about the G8 and the GTO set ups right after I made the post. I'll look into those some more, I have a buddy that is the sales manager at a local Pontiac GMC store, he will let me poke around and measure things if I want to.
I was not aware of the width issues with the C6 rear, I think that is no longer an option.
As for the back seat, if it goes away it just means less people I have tp haul around.
I did read about the Heidts project but I think I'd like to be able to head down to local dealership or parts store if I need parts in the future.

Rodger, I have seen your site. VERY cool stuff and amazing work you do!
If I go the C5 route, I'll be in touch.

Thanks for the offer on brackets deuce. I really appreciate that.
Eric
