Default Ok guys I need some advice about choosing a car.

I put this over on Pro-Touring also, so I figured I would ask you guys too. I have been lurking on this site for a while and have offered advice where I can (Taurus & Mark VIII electric fans). I currently have a nice 93 Saleen Mustang that I bought and love. This is the first Ford I have ever owned. I have always been a GM guy especially Camaros. I have owned 70, 71, 73, 74, 79, 85 T/A, 87 T/A, 95 Z28 and a 96 SS Camaro, and plenty of Olds 442's, 69 & 70 Chevelles but that was back in the days of finding them cheap and affordable. My problem is that although I love my Saleen and have wanted one for a while (yes it gets a ton of looks and thumbs up too) but I find myself almost uncontrollably drawn to 70-73 Camaros again. I absolutley love the PT look. I love a car to handle (one reason I love the Saleen) and the shear look of these cars. I'm not looking for a Kyle Tucker, Brian Finch or a Mike Yale's car ( I know I left some of the other awesome 2nd Gen cars but these came to mind). I know these cars take years and lots of $$$$ thrown at them. I would be looking for a car that someone has done the suspension or engine or hell even just a nice clean driver to start with. I just don't know what to do. I have a guy here in FL that has a really nice 73 that has had a lot of restoration stuff done to it mainly all the suspension work back to original, but that would be fine for now. I thought we had a trade worked out but he is having his first baby and needs the money. Tell me what you guys think. Sorry for the long thread.

p.s. just found out that the 73 was just sold today, but I found a 70 SS350 instead and it's just as nice.

That's a tough call for you, and I posted on PT in the daily driver's forum that you should keep it. You have one of the best looking Fox body stangs I've seen, and one day, that car will be very desirable/valuable, IMHO. It's also very unique and interesting. I'm a GM guy, but I have owned several Mustangs, and one of my favorite cars ever was my '85 SVO. Not a real barn stormer in the power dept, but still, extraordinarily fun to drive.

You would have to spend quite a sum, and invest several years getting a 2nd Gen Camaro to do things as well as that car already does. Sure, power is easy, but it's the little things like wind noise, comfort, reliability and economy etc. that you cannot address as simply.

IMHO, there is nothing as fun as shifting my bird through the gears on a back country road and hearing the pipes, smelling the smells, etc. But it comes with it's share of sacrifice.

There are times I wish I had a car like your Saleen, and $30K back in my pocket.

But, my favorite saying, the the truest of them all is: 'Everything has a price'.

The question you need to answer, is at what cost.

I am a little confused about what advice your asking for. Are you asking if you should keep your Mustang?

I would say keep/buy the car that you REALLY want! The one that your really going to love and work on.. dont settle, you will never finish or give a dam about it at the of the day if you dont really love it.
It's hard enought building these things up, I can only imagine if I was dumping money into a 1985 nissian sh*t box..i would never get it done.

Thanks Josh. I'm not sure on what I am going to do yet. I think if I get what I am wanting I will let it go. I did find a 71 SS 350 Camaro that I fell in love with. It's just like the one I had just out of high school.

71RS/SS: I was merely stating that I am having trouble deciding on wether to keep my Saleen (which I love) or to return to owning a 2nd Gen Camaro which I love as well. The Saleenis the first Ford I have ever owned. have owned 4 70-73 Camaros 2 3rd Gens and 2 th Gens......I have owned some F-Bodies. I have always loved 70-73 Camaros. I bought the Saleen after selling my 96 SS because I love them and they handle. This car is very rare and mostly original. I wouldn't want to mess with the integrity of the car. As I mentioned above that I found a 71 SS 350 but it is not all original. I would feel better PTing a car like that rather then the Saleen.

I appreciate all your advise.

I don't suppose you have the means to keep the Saleen and buy this Camaro?

The downside with a nice car like this is all you can do is maintain it. If you mod it, you detract its originality and value. If you drive it a lot then you rack up the miles, again lowering its value. Basically, you pay to hold it. It's only original once and then it becomes another restored car. If you enjoy that, then more power to you. Some people like doing that.

If you get this 2nd gen, as you basically said- you can do what you want, when you want and how you want. Then it becomes one of a kind and unique to you. If it wears out, if you change your mind, etc., then you fix it up. No harm, no foul.

I guess it come down to what you want more.
