Default 66 Mustang GT Introduction - and a question

This is my first full post here, been lurking a while..I've owned a 1966 Mustang factory GT fastback for quite a few years, and have had a lot of fun making suspension and drivetrain changes to end up with the car I want. It now has a Roush 342R engine, with the Dynatek 'Weber Look' injection setup, making 408whp. Handles tightly and goes great, but I've run out of things to do to it..

Anyway, to my question - I now have the Camaro bug, and want to build a PT First Gen Camaro, starting with a project car - by that I mean a car not in perfect condition but one that I can do all the normal PT body, suspension and drivetrain mods to. But I live outside the USA, in New Zealand. Apart from the option of purchasing from a licensed vehicle dealer and presumably ensuring clear title etc; what checks would I need to do to ensure I'm purchasing a legit titled car from a private seller. I know what needs to be done to purchase safely and legally in my own country, but not in the U.S.

Car will likely be purchased from the West Coast / CA area for shipping reasons

Thanks in anticipation for the advice
