Porsche Guys?

Being a new California guy, I figure its time that my daily driver not be a Jeep (Loved my three grand cherokees in New England snow), but its time for some fun.

I looked at a couple older Porsches yesterday. 1986 Carrera and some late 90's 993's. The biggest issue! No leg room. Plenty of headroom, but no way I can comfortably shift and sit for long periods. I am 6'4". Dealer is checking what it would take to move the seat rails and how much we can gain. But in the meantime, any Porsche guys on here that have any advice on what to be looking for? Some of these seem like deals, but want to make sure I am looking with knowledge.

Also, my god I thought insurance rates in NYC were bad, but I have gotten some insane quotes! S4 - 5k. C63 AMG - 6k, Base A4/3 Series - 3k. The old Porsche's are the cheapest.

Tim, what's your budget here? Power requirement? Keep stock or mod?

I have an 86 Carrera. I'm 5' 6" 140 with a size 8 1/2 shoe and it took me some time getting used to the pedals, seemed like the gas was almost behind the console at first. I don't notice at all now, just seems natural.

I see tall guys with the 911 based cars and always wondered how much of a pain it is for them. If the car fits me like a glove do they feel like they're stuffed into the car?

Porsche guys expect you'll want a PPI so don't hesitate to ask if you can get one. The money you spend could be lost 10 fold if the engine needs rebuild etc. Several significant changes were made in the mid-late 80's while they were still air cooled. Trans installed in the 911s changed in the mid 80's and the later one is favored. 1st gear use in the earlier one isn't as smooth and I believe the later one will take more power. I noticed the same offcenter feel!

But the 86' has alot of miles on the body 120k range, but the engine was fully rebuilt recently and overall in solid shape.

I am not sure on the budget. For an 80's 911 they seem to be in decent shape for around 20k, which is fine. And then the 90's 993's, I am open to getting into the mid-30's range. The problem I feel is that once you hit that range, the options really start to open up for both new cars and other used. I originally though a new Cayman would be cool, but i think insurance really turned me off to that, but for an older Porsche I think I would want to be under 35k, and anything over would need to be great because I would be comparing to alot of other options. These cars are appealling because in time it would be cool to modify a bit and maybe hit a track day with it.

mid 30k gets you into the a 996TT market and is a great car for the money these days. Just make sure you get one with a clean history and well maintained, which many if not most are. That's what I would do. The 80s and 90s 911/993 cars are too underpowered for my taste. The 993TT is a sweet body style tho IMO.

I am 5'11" and fit just great in my 996TT which I daily drove here for 2 years and 30k miles.

Wow! That makes me want to sell the Camaro or the Mustang and start building a Porsche. That's an amazing car.

Thats for once I get married and have kids to haul! I think the ultimate kid hauler would be an Aston Martin Rapide though!

Those are a couple nice examples. I like that you can build upon these pretty easily like our Camaro's. I will keep searching around, and adding in other options i may fit easier into!
