Default Brake Pedal adjustment

I have a lot of play in my brake pedal (69 Camaro) and sometimes misses the switch when released. I don't think there are bushings in there. I haven't taken it apart yet. Has anyone used washers to keep the pedal from moving side to side? How about using a different nut on each side of the brake pedal versus the bulky stock one?

It should have thin plastic bushings. I shimmed mine with hard washer and a soft fuzzy washer to get it reasonably tight. I fought my brake light switch popping out when racing with the factory setup. I ended up getting two nuts to hold the switch in place.
