Cut of date for Goodguys?

Since this forum seems to be active with Goodguys staffers, maybe I can get a response here. Why does Goodguys insist on maintaining the 1972 cut off date? The event started out with a 1948 date, then progressed to 1964 to accommodate popularity of the later big body cars. Once again the date was rolled forward to 1972 to include the increase in attention to the trucks and cars of that era.

With the expansion of the show series, why don't they consider a rolling date cut off like NSRA has gone to? There is a large void in shows for post 72 cars and trucks that needs to be filled. I have tried to get an answer from the staff at the Goodguys events, and no one wanted to discuss it. Maybe I can get one here.

because the shows are always packed, never seems to be an attendance problem like nsra has. That said, Ed announced recently that at certain events on Sundays, late models are being allowed in.

They quit making kool cars after 1970.... so to me - even the '72 is too late model.

There's nothing I personally hate worse than going to a "car show" and seeing a bunch of late model Corvettes and Camaros... if I want to see that I can go to a dealership. Just my opinion.

Tell me a car that is a '73 or later that you want to look at and that someone has made kool other than putting convolute tubing in a bright color on every wire and hose... Hot rodding mid 70's stuff consists of removing the smog pump.

Here is the press release from a month ago about the year cut off.

The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association has announced an all new Sunday-only promotion for three events this summer and fall. The “Sunday Get-Together” promotion welcomes American made or American powered cars and trucks of all years, makes and models to the events on Sunday only. The three events scheduled to host the new Goodguys “Sunday Get-Together” include the Goodguys 5th PEAK Chicagoland Nationals, August 12-14 at Chicagoland Speedway, the Goodguys 10th Midwestern Nationals, September 2-4 at Kansas Speedway and the Goodguys 18th Southeastern Nationals, October 28-30 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Any late model show car can participate in these three events on Sunday-only so long as it’s American made or American powered. “We’re really excited to be swinging open the event gates to the late model American made and American powered cars in Chicago, Kansas City and Charlotte,” said Goodguys VP of Event Operations Harry Daviess. “We have done Get-Together style events for over 25 years in our hometown of Pleasanton, California and it’s an outstanding format for car guys. The ‘Big Three’ build some awesome new muscle cars and hot rods. It will be something to see a ’69 Camaro parked next to a 2010 Camaro. Same with the Dodge Challengers, Ford Mustangs, GTO’s and others,” Daviess said. He also pointed out how well the classic car and old school hot rod & custom guys get along with late model owners. “All Goodguys are car guys at heart. This will further broaden the scope of the events allowing as many as six or seven generations of car people to participate in a Goodguys event.”

Goodguys will be making it easy for the newly welcomed participants to register. There will be a simple one day fee charged at registration for the later model cars. Goodguys will pick as many as 20 Sunday Get-Together awards and keep the AutoCross road course open on Sunday at these three events. A Sunday track cruise is also scheduled around each super speedway, allowing the new participants a chance to experience the thrill of traveling the hi banks in their car.

Bring out those late models for a Sunday drive!

We will see how these three events do first so come out and show your support.

Ed I appreciate you bringing that information to my attention. I do plan to attend the Kansas show with several of my buddies, but doubt that I will enter the event. I live in the South part of Texas, so the drive would be a bit excessive.

Greg you may be right. You seem to be a likable guy based on how the forum locals interact with your posting. It seems every time I make a post you have a negative comment to add and apparently I have not acclimated well to your humor. Thanks for the clarification.

The problem with opening up to more years generally is a space consideration. I belong to the Northwest Classic Chevy Club... and we do a TRI FIVE ONLY show... we fill the space and spill out across the street and into the street with5 '55/'56/'57's CHEVYS ONLY. We'd love to include '58's but there just simply no place to put them unless we moved to a different location - and that's just not going to happen.

A couple years ago GoodGuys opened up the years -- and our local show here at the Puyallup Fair grounds got so much bigger and better it's hard to even imagine! The added years turned it into a real exciting show with so many cars you can't walk and see them all. Everyone was positive about it that I talked to.

I completely understand that most GG events do fill up, but not all. I am surprised that they are going from 72 to totally open on the events listed. I think that might be a bit too much, but at least they are trying.

Personally I feel the rolling 25 or 30 year old cut off would be a good way to go.
