Default Fuel pump priming

Hello,

I have built a return type fuel system using an Aeromotive fuel pump (in-tank) that receive current when the ignition is switched on. A fuel pressure regulator allows the fuel to flow back to the tank.

I've seen in many applications that the fuel pump starts just for a couple of seconds during the ignition. Then it stops until the key is switched on the crank position.

How I should wire the pump to avoid that it keeps going at the ignition even though I do not start the engine ?

thanks for the help.

Are you carbureted or fuel injected? If you are fuel injected -- the pump can be / should be / controlled by the ECU and the run time (prime time) can be set in the software.

If you are running off the ignition switch --- then the pump should not run while cranking until you release the switch to the run position. Many ignition switches kill power to accessories while cranking. You'd have to confirm that with a volt/ohm meter. Check to see if you're hot on the accessory side of your fuse panel while cranking.

If it's wired to the ignition side - then the pump will run any time the key is in the ignition position. If I am working on my car and don't want the fuel pump to run -- I just pull the fuse to it.
