Default Firewall/Distributor clearance

I noticed a weird difference between mine and a friends 69 regarding the amount of clearance between the distributor the other day. I've got a stock 307 with an elec disctributor which I had to modify the firewall to allow it to fit. He's got a 350 with the same type setup and has about an inch of clearance with no modification at all. I was under the impression that all the small blocks were basically the same. Also checked his motor mounts and they appear to be in the same position as mine... any one seen this before?

You're right. All first gen smallblocks are dimensionally identical. It sounds to me like he may have a different motor mount/stand combo.

Default yes

gm offered 2-3 different frame side engine mounts, which all set the motor in a different spot, they made 2 different sb mounts and 1 bb mount, i know on my 68 with repro bb mounts from ricks that i have enough clearance also for an HEI style dist.

It could even be a worn out tranz mount letting the engine tilt back a little.
