Default Electric Power Steering

Here it is:

Anybody run one of these?

Thoughts?

I read a magazine article thit it took 45 minutes of hard figure 8s in a parking lot to kick in the thermal fuse.

I have one. I put it in about a year ago (welded plate into firewall--re-location is coming), and I have since done several autocrosses and a track day. More importantly, I live on an awesomely curvy road, and drive it like an ass. This system is awesome, and I would take it over anything with fluid and hoses and belts any day. I wish they made one strong enough for my truck.

On a side note, I run a 1.5:1 quickener above the unit, and a manual rack (Unisteer) below it. It all works together quite nicely.

How much set-up time/programming did it take?

I see that they have units for up to 4,500 lbs now.

Does it make any noise?

I have EPS in my daily driver and there is a bit of "rattle" play that you can pick up on rough roads right where the electric drive worms into the main shaft. If it was a standard system, I'd feel the need to adjust the box tighter - but not on this. It is actually under factory recall and per GM they will be replacing it soon anyway once parts are in stock (yes, one of those).

We also have a 2014 Silverado and it has the EPS on the rack. I recently did a frame off on the 2014 (yes...don't ask, what a nightmare) and had this part out of the truck on the shop floor. It is serious heavy duty stuff (4x4 with max trailer package...etc).

I have the 4500 pound unit--I remember that weight was one of Bryce's (Falcon guy/engineer) concerns when he was looking into electric steering, but in a Falcon (sub-3000 pounds), this unit is plenty strong--I've never tripped the heat sensor or whatever makes these things go into limp mode. The computer manages torque inputs awesomely and instantly (and there's a cool idiot light next to my key switch now--to show steering computer checks). I've never limped, and there is no detectable lag. My quickener does add a tiny bit of slop up top, though, but this is par for the course with those things...

The only way you hear noise is if you steer the car without the motor on, which you can't do (easily) with fluid-based dinosaur steering. This noise is pretty cool, as it sounds like a toy robot with a big servo in his gut. It is inaudible with the motor running (and I have relatively quiet exhaust).

One of the things that sold me on the concept was my Honda. I have a 2012 Honda Civic that my wife drives to work every day, and it (the EPS) works excellently, about the same as the one in the Falcon. Sadly, I didn't even know about electric steering until I stumbled upon it in the Honda, which lended cred to the Unisteer Unit (hence the salivation/obsession that followed). Honda's been doing these well (to me, at least) since the 90s, when they slapped one in the Acura NSX, which is still highly regarded as an all-timer of sports cars...

I've heard some funky things about the GM setup, but I'm sure they'll catch up to Honda by 2020 or so...

Thanks, Ron--I am now making some half-witted signature changes... You are welcome to the good parts (as you favorably interpret them)...
