New project, 1970 Mustang - Lateral-g Forums

Hey all - been watching the forum for a while and finally rescued a 1970 Mustang that needs just about everything upgraded! Originality is long gone, so the only restraints are time and budget. I'm hoping to turn this into an all around cruiser that won't embarrass itself on the drag strip or auto cross track.

First stop - brakes (see what I did there?)

The car currently has 4 wheel manual drums, and that's just not gonna work. For those that have upgraded, what would you do if you could do it over again?

Looking forward to being part of the community, albeit with more questions than answers probably!

Welcome to the group!

If you've resolved suspension and rear axle choices, it seems the overwhelming majority of brake projects have been resolved with great advice from Tobin at Kore3....he's a sponsor (clickable from the column at left of the page).

For the life of me, I can't think of a pun to match yours right now....sorry.

3. What are you thinking.., regarding engine, tranny, and axle package?
Any thoughts yet?

4. How is the body of your Mustang? RUST, dents, etc.

5. Timeline? (only took me 10.5 years to build my red car so I don't judge).

6. How can we on Lat-G help you now? We care.

Body is solid, straight, just matte back for now. The body is pretty low on my priority list. Straight and solid was all I really wanted. Brakes have to be first. I'm going to start making some calls soon about upgrades, but this will NOT be a maximum effort car, I just can't afford that.

Think nice driver.

Currently has a 351 Cleveland that has been rebuilt with a mild cam, a C4 trans that has also been rebuilt (but will be replaced with a 5 speed) and the original 8" rearend with 2.80 gears (also on the chopping block).

With 3 kids and working rotating 12 hour shifts, this will definitely be a long term, drive it as I upgrade it type deal.

Welcome to the group.

Since budget is a concern and it's not a max effort car, look to Mustang Steve for brackets that allow you to bolt the newer mustang brakes on. This will allow you to go to the parts store/dealer when you need replacements. Next up I would assume suspension. If budget minded, look into Open Tracker Racing for their upgraded stock parts. Lower the upper controls aka "Arning/Shelby" drop and that will greatly help with handling.

x2 on using modern Mustang brakes. I love Tobin/Kore3 and have them on my car. If he has a kit for modern mustang brakes, you can't go wrong.

Mike Maier Inc, https://mikemaierinc.com/, has really great products for the car. I'm helping my buddy with the long term build of his 69 Grand Coupe. He's using Mike's parts and has similar goals as you do. I've been very impressed with Mike's sub frame connectors, x-brace, and pan hard rod kit.
