Is it a SS?

How can I tell if my 68 Camaro is a Super Sport or a Standard? The car didn't come with any paper work nor did it come with an engine or tranny. The car resides in southern California at my grandparents lot. I will be out there this weekend to pull it out of the weeds and to write down the vin and cowl tag numbers....what should I be looking for that will help me determine if it is an SS or not? There is a factory hole cut in the floor for the tranny, which i was told made it a 4 speed car, but i'm sure they made automatics in the floor as well. Thanks!

For Chevelles in 1968, the SS was a separate model, not an option, so you could tell by the VIN and/or trim tag. I'm assuming it would be the same for Camaros. I would suggest going to www.teamcamaro.com and doing some searching. I have no doubt you'll find your answer there.

Hmmm....it looks like identifying a '68 SS by the VIN only applies to Chevelles. However, there are other clues that may help.

68 Camaros are the hardest of the first gens to decode without documentation. www.camaros.net is a wealth of info and you can do a search over there and probably find your answer.

The best way is the POP or the build sheet, other than that get out you dectective gear, there's all kinds of stuff to look for, springs, gas line breaks holes for tailpipes etcetcetc,

Mines a SS but there not one original piece of equipment on it, so I changed the color and built it the way I wanted,

Hi!
If You had the original block , maybe You could find out if it was a SS.
Look for the ENGINE ASSEMBLY DATE/SUFFIX CODE .

I don´t know about -68 Camaro , but I was told the -69 SS had a minimum 300hp/350ci engine.

Also discbrakes in the front on SS.

Maybe same with the -68?

I also noticed that there is a hole drilled (see pic) on upper control arms on some Camaros (-69s).They were SS.
Maybe it has something to do with ,if there were discbrakes mounted from the beginning?

I bought My car with a crate engine,so it is not possible to look for the suffix code.
But the brake hose bracket is mounted on the frame.(see pic). Willwood brakes on the car when I bought it,so i don´t know if there were discbrakes from the factory.
So i think mine is a "standard".
