LS1 block huggers

Hi everyone,

I'm building the 65 porsche with the LS1 motor. I have the engine in now and looking at header options. I have clearance issues and little room - so my options might only allow a block hugger type short header. My goal for the engine is 400 hp (intake, cam, headers and 2.5 exhaust). Is that possible with hugger style headers ? Is it a waste for little gain over the stock units ?

Sanderson makes some nice ones, I have used the street and performance ones on other projects and they have a huge collector with that square flange deal that they have.

You know if your doing all this work on you car, I know you can build your own set of headers. ten you could have long tubes that fit. Headers are intimidating, but not that hard once you get the hang of things. header kits are the way to go.

Just my 2 cents. I have never had much luck with block hugger headers. Plus when you use block hugger header, you have to connect the exhaust which goes down from the flange and makes a 90 degree bend. Even if you start the bend at the header flange you have a minimun of 7-8" until the bottom, so it winds up taking more room.

Check out those headers in the 66 nova project, they took 23 hours to the point you see. But they clear and are removable.

I have spent the last 3 days looking at all the short block hugger headers.... - and I'll agree that none will work with the tiny space I have to work in. I really like the look and material of the Street and Performance header - but as you cited - the collector is too large for my space. Looks like I'm down to 3 options. 1 is stay stock (boring) and have them blasted and ceramic coated in/out. 2 is S&P's vette shorty - that looks great and works by ending the collector in the original angled location. Or 3 is build a custom set.

I currently have the vette batwing pan on there and it's my preference but it eats up side space. But I also have an 04 GTO front sump pan in the shop now - and I think a camaro or caddy rear sump pan might work - but they are taller. Losing the batwing kickouts will give me the side space I need.

There are always too many choices and never enough time or money.....

The LS2 corvette man is really nice, I have used it on a bunch of projects.

Plus I also have a set of LS7 exhaust manifolds if you want those over the stock manifolds you have. I can talk to John but I'm sure we can make you the deal of the century on those.

Thanks again for the help ! It's really nice that people at Lat-G are always willing to shrae and help out - that's way cool ! Did some final mock-ups this weekend and looks like the stock C5 vette manifolds and batwing pan aren't the best option either. So it will need to get a Camaro pan and the Hookers - or maybe the LS7's you have. I did a little research this morning looking at available collectors for those and how quickly I could turn 90 degrees - and they might work out. PM me with a couple pics and a price if you'd be so kind (and are interested) and I'll check it out.
