Hydraboost or Elec Vacuum Pump?

Going to require a vacuum "assist" solution in trying to avoid sharing the MAP sensor vacuum source with the booster in my 4th gen fbody. Kinsler HIGHLY suggests in order to keep the MAP "quiet" I need to dedicate sourcing the intake vacuum and brakes/steering seperately. Because I'd rather not compromise either in terms of performance, does anyone have experience with either? I heard Elec Vac Pumps can be noisy and unreliable....thoughts? Sources for either?

TIA!

Ask anyone with a Grand National about what they think of electric vacuum brake pumps. My buddy replaced two and then gave up and drives his without one. He's going over to Hydra boost.

Personal opinion Shube....hydroboost done right will remind you to wear seat belts for facial protection. Not sure who the leader is for fourth gens, but Hydratech is a leader in old car retrofits:

Hydroboost...if you've got a questionable vacuum situation, I'd just remove it from the equation.

I was 70/30 in favor of the hydro simply because it makes the most sense. Thanks Tobin

Haha...my man! Just talked to Jim over there today  Appears they can have one in my paws in a couple weeks! Cuttin in CLOSE to PT though!!!

Oooh and there's a shiney option too!! :unibrow:

It doesnt make sense to put those big 'ol binders up front without them making your nose bleed when you gotta stop right?

Matt@BOS 04-10-2012 08:55 PM

There is no doubt that hydroboost will give you more than enough power to lock up the front wheels, but how do you want the pedal to feel? I've heard hydroboost setups have a "light" pedal feel. Maybe that is something someone else can elaborate on. Personally, I like good ol' fashioned manual brakes, when they're done right.

Really, you just have to figure out what is right for you based on you intended purpose for the car, etc.

I ordered my hydroboost unit from Jim @ Hydratech for my 3rd gen F-body (with show-prep) and It looks really good. Jim's a good guy to deal with as well.

OVRKILL 04-13-2012 11:52 AM

^^^ Just ordered it this afternoon!! :woot:

Thanks again Jim! (I know you're reading this ;) )

Regarding pedal feel, Hydroboost has a phenomenal feel.
You can actually feel the pedal "talk" to you- takes a little to get used to, we use 'em all the time and customers are elated!

Factoid: most all brake systems put about 800psi to the calipers/pads, Hydroboost systems give about 1200psi. That equates to 50% better braking pressure

Paul @ HydraTech is the man!

My finger prints are all over your parts, as I built your order personally. I am tickled that you are pleased with your goods! Especially since Detroit is home town for me. (let's go RED WINGS) :willy:

With the ABS / TCS functioning properly, you will be able to apply full line pressure to the brakes and let the computer make the rest of the decisions = retinal detachment warning!

If you would please be so kind, do let us know how it all goes for you.

If you have any questions before / during / after your installation, do please feel free to get in touch with Jim Petty:

Need someone to ride shotgun for the HRPT? LOL (product testing, right!?)

Evaporate 05-31-2012 10:26 PM

OVRKLL,

Do you have more pics of how you routed the braided the power steering lines? I bought the Hydratech 6' braided lines kit and wanted to know how much I should cut off each line. I'm needing some reference because I have the k-member and motor out of my '96 fbody at the moment, so any help would be awesome.

Thanks:)

Hydratech® 06-02-2012 03:11 PM

Suggestion?

I do not recommend you tackle the PS lines until you have the K member and engine back in place. Line lengths really should be custom tailored once everything else is in place (engine, rack, all underhood items), as one small little change in routing can make for quite a difference in finished line lengths. There are so many different ways to route the lines, that it becomes much more a matter of personal tastes than anything else - hold off on this until one of your later steps.

Thank you Paul:cool:

It looks like that is what I'll be doing at this point.

OVRKLL, your ride is killer, gotta rank as one of the best 4th gens out there.

ProTouring442 06-05-2012 07:07 PM

I was thinking of running a Hydroboost with an electric power steering pump from a Toyota MR2.

Shiny Side Up!

Thanks!! To Paul's point, DEFINATELY wait until you get the engine back in the hole. I'm pretty much done with the set-up for now....just received a few more fittings from Jim and the boys to make things work a little better. Pic below is the solution to eliminate the "T" fitting suggested for the low pressure return from the unit. Punched a hole in my beautiful hydrodipped resevoir :_paranoid

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...hyroboost1.jpg

Also decided to eliminate the power steering fluid cooler that's inline on the upper radiator hose....going to replace it with a "real" fluid cooler near the radiator. Will look 10x cleaner too

More pics to follow....

WSSix 06-17-2012 05:32 PM

Very clean install. Good job.

Hydratech® 06-18-2012 04:36 PM

Brent, it looks like you are getting closer and closer - looking good!

Bill, those MR2 and other electric pumps don't put out enough pressure and volume to properly power up one of these systems. We have worked with a few customers that have attempted this and it hasn't worked out for them. We then coached them through the installation of a belt driven PS pump to only run the brakes standalone (so that they could retain the manual steering) to get them operational...

Lol....and everytime I think I do, I get a little further away. ;)

Heads up for the 4th gen guys with this kit....notice the brake lines from the master. The hydra boost puts them further forward then stock, gonna need new ones or re-bend the stockers. :(

Cant wait to get this thing runnin just so I can hit the brakes

I've installed about 8 of these systems and not one complaint from anyone.
Man your under hood detail looks to be phenominal.

I'm pretty excited about it myself. The cool factor went up a few points once it was in place. Here's a pic of the reason for adding a non-vacuum style set-up....ITB intake.

That is a killer engine compartment!!

The Hydroboost is one of the best installed parts on my car, it provides great braking performance and feel. You'll love it!!!

edge04 09-05-2012 01:04 PM

can the hydroboost and MC be installed under the dash? Knowing I would neeed to possibly make a bracket what else might be an issue?

Hydratech® 09-06-2012 05:17 PM

Not a problem - we set customers up with our universal models for use with the Kugel Komponents underdash pedal assemblies on a very regular basis.

Here is a link to our universal models:

http://www.hydratechbraking.com/Universal.html

These models are designed to bolt in place of the typical 7" and 8" dual diaphragm vacuum boosters (which means they can substitute the vacuum boosters typically used in the Kugel Komponents pedal assemblies as a direct plug n play upscale option).

Here is a link to the Kugel Komponents underdash conversion pedal assemblies:

http://www.kugelkomponents.com/zenca...a7ef19ebeaed6f

You will have to plumb PS lines and brake lines to the components under the dash to make it happen, so there is some further complexity to making this happen, though we have many customers that have successfully installed these systems under dash without concerns.

edge04 09-06-2012 05:49 PM

Awesome!! but you may have just sold me on a fire wall install with the pics in the other post lol

I'm building a twin turbo 1966 Nova. Plan was to keep engine bay as clean as possible. Let me sort through some of the other items needed in the bay and get back to you with an order. Thanks!!

Hydratech® 09-06-2012 06:43 PM

Here is an early Nova installation for visual reference as to installed layout:

OVRKILL 08-09-2013 08:47 PM

The beast rolls....and stops hard enough to make your nose bleed. Apparently you can stop 800hp

Thanks again to the guys at Hydratech! Guys that completed the street tune said, "BRAKES ARE AWESOME!!! Only dropped the lap top twice before we figured it out!" Wicked combo guys, thanks again!

Photo shoot coming this weekend....in the interim
