Odd. As I said, my 17 x 9.5 wheels put the outer lip at the same spot as a 17 x 8" with 4" of backspacing would and I have *plenty* of room up front.

Tire clearance depends on your alignment too. I run -0.75 degrees of negative camber right now which helps with front fender lip clearance.

It's all fine to analyze this, but the only way to make sure what is going to fit YOUR car is to go out and mockup and measure YOUR car. Even models of the same year vary from car to car. Assembly line tolerances 35-40 years ago aren't what they are today!
