DSE designed the QL around that shock. It will be hard to find another one that will give the range of adjustment and proper ride height (of the shock). I tried, and was unhappy with the results.

I shopped around trying to find the Koni shock DSE uses and was not able to find a price that was cheaper enough than DSE to justify the risk that it might not be the exact one.

all that you need to know is what the shock length (eye to eye) at ride height, and how much compression rebound you need, generally on first gen camaros whether its stock or aftermarket chassis, a 5 inch shock works perfect.
that said a 5 inch shock can come in different installed height lengths. so if yo u set your project up at ride height and measure from center to center of the mounts this is your installed height, now you can look for shocks. this is important because you can adjust a coil over lower etc, however you loose valuable shock length when in compression, so you really want to measure at ride height, then tune 1/4 inch here or there.

remember that valving is key so if you get your own shocks it would be in your best interest to buy adjustable, so you can tune the ride, if not buying adjustable it would be worth the money to just buy the koni shocks from dse

Thanx again. I like the adjustable route.

There are as many variations on the eye to eye length for a given stroke vs spring adjustment room as there are manufacturers of shocks.

I tried a 5 inch stroke varishock on my QL and could not get a spring length to get the ride height I wanted. The Konis have the entire body threaded, something other shocks do not have. This widens the spring options, which as I am sure you know are as important to get right as the shock, you don't want to stack the coils on compression or lose the spring seat on full extension.

yeah but with that said i do not mess around with junk coil overs, any coil over i use has a full threaded body and is a real coil over, no a shock with a coil over kit on it.
most good coil overs, that are fully threaded and are a 5 inch shock you can use an 8 inch or 10 inch spring, on my chassis's i use a custom valved bilstein that is 14.5 at ride height, 5 inch shock and with the body being fully threaded i can use a 8 inch or 10 inch spring

serious, unless you are going to buy a upper end coil over, just buy the konis from dse
