Opinions on Kandy paints? - Lateral-g Forums

Hey folks, there's a possibility that we will be getting the Chevelle repainted for SEMA and House of Kolors will be supplying the materials. While I was going over colors with my painter last night, I came to the Kandy page and was really drawn to a bright Kandy Apple red over a silver base. It's not too flashy and a very beautiful color. I just wanted to see what you guys think of Kandy colors. I'm talking about the translucent colors over colored or metallic basecoats, and not the heavily flaked paints.

All opinions are welcome...I haven't called in the order yet!

p.s. The paint scheme will be similar just improved, our main goal is to have a much straighter body this time around.

Kandy's are very very nice when done properly it is not very often you find a really really good kandy paint job and when you do there is usually a crowd around it! They are so transparent they hard to spray....if your guy can do it, I say go for it! are you still going to run the silver tribal design to break up the two tone?

Although Kandies are very eye appealing (I like em alot) the repairability is very difficult if not impossible most of the time.(tri-coats) If you ever chip it or scratch it you will be bummed. Talk to your painter about any future touch up jobs and get his thoughts on that as well.

BTW, congrats on your magazine coverage. That Chevelle is sweet!!

Mine is candy red with a silver base and I love it. Take a look at my pics.

The pics don't do it alot of justice, it's very eye-catching out in the sun.

I'd highly recommend it, however be careful if you ever scratch it or damage anything.... good luck matching it.

I still plan on doing a silver tribal design, but this time a professional artist is going to do the masking and flame design, and not some guy that gets called in from time to time to do flames. The flames on my car now were WAY off from my original design.

The painter has already offered a lifetime guarantee on the work, so he said not to freak out if it gets chipped, scuffed, etc.

I should know by the end of the weekend if we are going to be able to do it.

Lifetime garuntee on a KANDY JOB???? That is some balls. I talked with HOK back in the spring and they have come out with a kandy base which is suppose to be easier to shoot than the kandy clears. The red I have always wanted to paint my car was to look like it was anodized and cleared. It would look wicked, but I would be scared of chipping it. I say go for it if he is going to give you that kind of garuntee in WRITING with his own blood.

The HOC pearls are a nice option. not nearly as hard to get right, and can be touched up. but then again, Kandy is Kandy!

kandys look great, tough-ups ARE doable.... but no fun at all. life-time guarantee sounds kinda odd...but hey... if he will stand behind it...sweet deal.

my personal opinion..... stick with solid color... if hok is kickin down the materials...go with euro red, solid black(no ghetto pearl this time), and orion silver on the graphics.

whats the deal with the graphics anyway... is it gonna be flames, tribals or ??? if you decide to "free-hand" em out instead of comp cut stencil... i might be able to be persuaded to cruise down and do it for ya. still gonna need that mustang rendering when ya get caught up. (caught up...yeah right)

Kandy is where its at. i wish i would of done mine in kandy. the look of it is just nothing that you can accieve with regular paint. here is a couple pics of kandy viecles i have had a hand in.

There are some really beautiful kandy colours out there, they're ideal for show cars/trailer queens,but I'd not recommend them to a customer if the car was to be used on a regular basis as it really is a nightmare to blend in & match if it were to get scratched or dented. It seems REALLY odd that the guy is gonna give the paintjob a lifetime guarantee & is probably unheard of in the business. i'd really want to know why he's prepared to do this & if he intends to use any "get out" clauses. To be honest I really would be very wary of someone offering that sort of deal, just sounds too good to be true. Maybe he thinks that he'll recoup money/fame/fortune from doing the job, but you can bet your bottom dollar that after the initial exposure he gets & after painting the car a coupla times, he's not gonna want to do it.Just think,it could cost him a paintjob every few years or so to keep it looking right, multiply that by the life of the car, what...10-15 years +, he's into a whole load of hurt, plus in the meantime he could go outta business anyway. I think you'd be better off with one of the new pearl finshes & if it ever goes tits up at least any good bodyshop would repair it for you, HTH
