That Olds was built by Gene Crowe for the McKee/Salyer Mark 10 Can-Am car. Mark Donohue brought the turbo idea to Porsche in 1971 as a way of coping with the displacement defecit the flat 12s had to the big block Chevies that were dominating the Can-Am. The first turbocharged Porsche 917/10 raced at Mosport in the opening round of the 1972 Can-Am series. By the next year, the 917s had a 5.4 liter engine, bigger turbos, and a boost control knob that gave as much as 1200hp if needed. On the dyno, the same engine put out 1510hp!
