I'm no expert and really can't tell you the benefits of using the voltage regulator or the negatives of not using it. What I can say is, before selling my BBC to install my LS, I ran an A1000 with no voltage regulator on a carbed 509 c.i. motor with nearly the same hp/tq numbers as you with no problems. None at all and put about 2k on the motor with the A1000 in 2 years without a single problem. I plan on using it in with my LS swap too. So, I would say yes thru the process of elimination. But again, I'm nobody. I'm just sharing my personal experience and hope this helps.
