I'm not certain if you have a PCM/harness yet or not. If you do have the 98 already, it's not difficult to re-pin the 98 harness for the 99+ PCM. You can pick up one of the later PCM's for between $100 to $150.

However I wouldn't say it's a requirement that you do so. You're not going wild with this motor. A tune for cam and exhaust shouldn't be overly complicated on your 98 PCM

if i were you and doing anything to a 98-2000 ls1 motor i would change out the oil pump to a ls6 oil pump. the stock ls1's have low oil pressure problems. the ls6 is cheap insurance to make sure the oil pressure stays where it should and flows alittle more.
