Default heat control window film

I was reading about protective films in the latest Diesel power magazine and they mentioned 3M had a window film that controlled heat but didn't tint the windows. Here's the link

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3...motive_Films/#

For those not wanting to tint your windows I think this would be a great product. I personally will be doing this to the windshield of the truck I buy. I'm confident I could get away with the CR90 on the windshield. Honestly not sure if I'd go with the CR40 on the rest of the truck because I like dark windows and the CR40 isn't dark enough for me. I may go CR90 and then regular tint on top. Honestly, I'm not sure. I just thought this would be great for people that want to control heat from sunlight in their cars. The fact that the CR90 can be put on the windshield and you'll get away with it really interested me.

Thanks for posting. My wife will love that. She's dead set against tinting the front windows as its illegal here in CA, but that solves that issue. I hate driving her car when its hot out, and the sun blaring down right on my face.

I'm very interested in this stuff. Gonna call up a dealer this week and check it out.

Just talked to an installer about it. He said if you have the spare change laying around then sure he would do it. But it would cost about $700 to do my crew cab. I did some research on this because i honestly didn't know anything about tint besides Visible Light Transmitted (VLT).

Things i learned in relation to heat:

There are 2 factors that come into play. Total Solar Energy Rejected (TSER) and Infrared Rejected. Between the 2 they play a 50/50 part in the production of heat. With that being said i compared the Crystaline and Color Stable from 3m. The Color Stable does not have any IR rejection.

So in theory is should cut the heat inside your vehicle by about 50%-60% vs regular tint. But for me it's not going to be worth it at twice the cost of the Color Stable. There is only one installer in San Antonio and he doesn't keep it in stock, and if i wanted to do 2 different shades (E.G. windshield vs everything else) it would be outrageous b/c i would have to pay for 2 separate rolls. Since he only have 1-2 requests a year.

I have remote start on my truck and i will stick to using that for now. With that being said there are other options for ir rejecting tint to include Huper Optik and Formula One, i just haven't done enough research to see 1) if it's available in my area and 2) if its worth the cost.

I have some friends that run a tint shop in San Marcos "Sal's House of Tint".
They have a clear window tint that sounds similar to the 3M brand listed above. I want to say that all of the tint they have rejects IR. We considered having the clear added to our front window but the only car we got a price quote on was our 01 Dodge Viper with a Major curved window; I think he quote $350 just for that window due to the curvature of it.

Believe that would still be illegal here in Cali, law says no film whatsoever to be applied to side/front glass...could be wrong though.

Damn Cali sucks if you can't tint side windows! Here in Florida, we have to be at or above 28% on dr/pass windows, 20% on any remaining side glass and 15% on the back window.

That cost of $350 to tint the windshield is crazy...the roll of tint probably costs $50 bucks

From what I have read you can can't use aftermarketing tinting (factory is okay) but you can use UV blockers but it must allow 70% of the visible light through.

Living in Vegas window tint is a must. I've had tint on the front window of my trucks for the last 11 years and it does a great job of cutting the heat down. Most people didn't even know I had tint on the windshield. I highly recommend doing this...especially if you have a black interior like I do.

Wow! I had no idea it was that expensive. I figured it would cost more than a regular tint job but dang is that a lot. Personally, tinted windows does enough for keeping the heat down inside my trailblazer that I am happy to just apply regular tinting to the windows of my vehicles even if it's doing very little compared to this stuff. If the truck has been sitting, I expect the interior to be hot. It's when going down the road that I want the heat rejected the most. That's where tinted windows work well at keeping you cool inside. I routinely have to turn my AC to a rather low setting even when it's 100+ here because I'm getting too cool. Now my crew cab work truck that has no tint at all has the AC going full blast most of the time during the day just to keep from roasting inside.
