If you flip the tank over the resistance should swing to the other end.

IIRC from my install the black wire is the ground wire.

If black isn't ground, it should be.

If it's not, then you know it's the other way around.

I'd go with Greg's advice on this. Most automotive and marine fuel senders use black as ground.
