 I have tried a few different ways of doing it.  This is not easy.  I knew someone would eventually ask the question so here are a few photos.  To get it to fit in the housing is a lot of trial and error.

They bolt on with studs (more solid) and have a slightly longer neck.

Define direct replacement.  It is not a direct replacement.  Some assembly required.

 |  Thanks for the reply. I mean if the base of the G Body mirror and the stud spacing match with the 68 camaro mirror base, so there is no need to drill holes at different locations to fix the G Body mirror.

Yes you need to drill two holes and sort out what to do with the remote mirror control on the drivers side.
